Majority of people living in trans Himalayan region of Ladakh, Zanskar, Spiti, Lahaul and Kinnaur are Buddhist. Guru Padmasambhava arrived in this area in the beginning of 8^th century. He introduced and establish Mahayana Tantric Buddhism by suppressing the evil forces opposed to Buddhism through his tantric prowess and gained a position even higher than Buddha in Lamaism. Every village has its own monastery and lamas dominate the culural and social life of community.
